The Constitution & HANDBOOK of the Constitutional Cherokee details what the organization is to look like.
If your chapter is ready to organize, here are some steps you might need to follow:
•Obtain a local business license if applicable-- consult with a local attorney to be sure what you need to do.
•Elect a Board of Directors and elect Officers-- following the HANDBOOK of the Constitutional Cherokee
•Incorporate as a nonprofit- Follow the HANDBOOK of the Constitutional Cherokee
•Prepare and File Articles of Incorporation-- Be Sure to follow the HANDBOOK of the Constitutional Cherokee
•Vote-- record that your group did Adopt the HANDBOOK of the Constitutional Cherokee as your own
•Prepare and Obtain EIN via IRS Form SS4.
•Obtain 501c3 tax exemption status-- there are attorneys that handle this, and also organizations. Your group can do it yourself, but its best to get good legal counsel to make sure what you file is in keeping with the HANDBOOK and also with current federal and state guidelines.
•Prepare And Maintain First Minutes of Your First Meeting of Board of Directors [aka as the Council-- see the HANDBOOK for details]
•Prepare and File For State Tax Exemption
•Prepare and File Charity Solicitation Registration.
On an ongoing basis, in order to maintain your good standing, most organizations will have to do the following:
•Prepare and File Annual Solicitation Report.
•Prepare and File Statement of Information/ Annual Report.
•Prepare and File IRS Form 990 and STATE TAX Form.
Once the organization has been established we recommend to recruit a fundraising team, develop a strategic plan together, develop a website, have a grant writer develop a professional grant proposal and implement some marketing strategies to help create awareness of your organization and services.
